The secrets of Lews Castle Tartan

Updated: Mar 28, 2019

A tartan created to capture not only the essence of the castle, but also the Hebrides.

Created by our Head Tailor, the Caisteal Leodhais (Lews Castle) tartan is designed to capture the mystical spirit of the Outer Hebrides, the rich culture of the islanders and the storied history of Lews Castle.

"...designed to capture the mystical spirit of the Outer Hebrides."

The purple and green are for the islands of Lewis and Harris. Black represents the peat that fuelled life on the island for many centuries. Brown represents the Harris Tweed industry and the brown stones of Lews castle. Light blue is for Stornoway harbour and the golden yellow is for the Castle’s regal air.
